The story behind the story
The Wonders of Welland is a captivating, 36-page literary endeavour authored and illustrated by City staff in collaboration
with CERF Niagara, Pride Niagara, and various other community partners. This distinctive book is characterized by a compelling narrative
that not only engages readers with a charming story but also addresses the imperative for representation.
With meaningful artwork by Stephanie Fiddler-Stanwyck, a local Indigenous artist, enhancing our land acknowledgement and a diverse family portraying the LGBTQ2+
community, the book proudly embraces diversity and inclusivity.
This innovative work serves the dual purpose of easing the anxieties of relocation and fostering a genuine sense of belonging and
community among residents, both new and existing. The book’s colourful pages unfold across a calendar year in Welland, unveiling must-visit
establishments, treasured gems, and diverse opportunities within the community. Through creative visual and textual storytelling, the project
bridges generational gaps, promotes literacy, encourages family bonding, and nurtures a sense of civic pride and community engagement.

FAQs
Where did inspiration for the book come from?
Those who worked on the book had life-changing experiences in their childhoods and recognized how they could be embraced as
creative inspiration for this unique storytelling endeavour. When blended with Welland’s anticipated growth over the next decade
and beyond, the idea to develop a dynamic resource to ease the anxieties of moving to a new city began to grow.
Although we have a strong familiarity with the city, we recognize that newcomers will see Welland with fresh eyes, and we wanted
to create something special that would resonate with both new and existing residents, fostering a genuine feeling of belonging and community.
How did you come up with the characters?
The characters in the book were crafted with a respectful nod to the growing diversity in the city of Welland. We worked collaboratively

What age group is the book intended for?
The book is designed for readers of all ages. Its enchanting narrative and vibrant illustrations make it accessible and enjoyable for
young children and those young at heart. The book is written at approximately a level-three reading level.

How much did it cost to produce?
We’re thrilled to offer the book to the community at no cost, largely because there was no direct cost to produce it, other than staff
time. This was made possible through the financial support of businesses in the development community and the generous in-kind contributions
from CERF Niagara, Pride Niagara, and the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre.
Will there be more books with these characters?
We'll never say never, but at this time, our friends Jackson and Chipper are one-hit wonders.
