Outdoor Sports Equipment Lockers
Making recreation more accessible in Welland
Enjoy free access to sports equipment at select City of Welland parks and outdoor recreation spaces through Equip Sport lockers. These lockers are stocked with items like soccer balls, basketballs, and more, making it easy for residents of all ages and abilities to get active and have fun.
The City of Welland, in partnership with Equip Sport and Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, is introducing this initiative to help remove barriers to participation and support active, healthy communities.
How it works
Each locker is filled with free sport and recreation equipment that can be borrowed on site. No payment or credit card is required, just your phone and a willingness to play!
To use the lockers:
- Download the free Equip Sport app
- Use the app to unlock a locker
- Borrow the equipment and enjoy your activity
- Return the items when you’re finished

What are the sports equipment lockers?
The lockers are free, open-access stations located in select City of Welland parks where residents can borrow sports equipment such as soccer balls, basketballs, footballs, and frisbees using a smartphone app. They are designed to make it easier for everyone to stay active and enjoy local recreation spaces.
How do I borrow equipment?
Equipment can be borrowed using the Equip Sport smartphone app, available for Android and Apple devices. Once downloaded, you can unlock a locker, take the equipment you need, and return it when you are finished.
Is there a cost to use the lockers?
No. Equipment is completely free to borrow. This program supports the City of Welland’s commitment to accessible and inclusive recreation opportunities.
What types of sports equipment are available?
Each locker includes equipment for popular park activities such as soccer, basketball, and frisbee. Equipment may vary slightly by location.
Do I need to return the equipment the same day?
Yes. Equipment is intended for short-term, same-day use so that it remains available for others in the community. The app will remind you to return items to the same locker.
What if the locker is empty or equipment is damaged?
You can report missing or damaged items directly through the Equip Sport app. This helps ensure lockers are restocked and maintained for all users.
What if I don’t have a smartphone?
At this time, lockers can only be accessed through the Equip Sport app. Residents without a smartphone are encouraged to access equipment with a friend or family member who has the app, or to bring their own equipment.
Why is the City of Welland offering this program?
This program supports active living by reducing barriers to participation in recreation. By providing free access to sports equipment, the City encourages spontaneous play, community connection, and healthy lifestyles.
Who is Equip Sport?
Equip Sport is an organization that provides free, open-access sports equipment stations in communities across Canada and internationally.
What happens if equipment isn’t returned?
The app tracks borrowing sessions and links them to a user account. If equipment is not returned, reminders are issued and follow-up may occur. Users may be responsible for replacing missing items.
