Outdoor Rinks - Volunteers

Thank you for your interest in wanting to contribute to our community through volunteering.

A volunteer is anyone who performs a directed task on behalf of the City of Welland and does not receive compensation. Volunteers are not considered employees of the City, and they must be officially accepted by the City before performing any tasks.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • Volunteers are responsible for ensuring that all members of the community have free and equal access to the outdoor ice rinks.
  • Equipment for maintaining the ice rink will be provided by the City of Welland. Volunteers must ensure that any City-provided equipment is properly stored, maintained, and returned in satisfactory condition at the end of the season.

Expectations

Volunteers must clear snow from the outdoor ice rink to maintain safe and accessible conditions for all users.

All incidents, accidents, or medical injuries occurring at the outdoor ice rink must be reported and documented, including those involving participants, volunteers, or property damage. These reports should be submitted promptly to parksandforestry@welland.ca.

We believe that volunteers are a valuable resource, playing a very important role in meeting the City’s mission to provide optimum leisure services that enhance the quality of life, health and well-being of our community.

  • Act as an ambassador for the City while performing volunteer duties.

  • Providing exceptional service to our community by being friendly, informed, and respectful.
  • Dressing in a way that displays a clean appearance and is appropriate for the event and weather.

Anyone under 18 years of age must have parental or guardian consent to volunteer.

  • Volunteers are prohibited from being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while performing duties and representing the City.
  • Volunteers are prohibited from smoking or vaping while volunteering at City events.
  • Volunteers are expected to comply with the policies, expectations, and directions given by City staff to ensure both personal safety and success of the event.
  • Any volunteer disregarding the Code of Conduct may be asked to forfeit their position, be subject to disciplinary action, and/or asked to leave the premises.

How to build a rink

Most of the building of the rinks are already completed. The rink area just needs to be filled with water once we have subzero temperatures.

Only fill rink area once there are consistent temperatures below zero degrees Celsius forecasted.
