Welland City Councillor Sharmila Setaram elected to AMO’s Small Urban Caucus

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | August 23, 2024

The City of Welland is proud to announce that Ward 3 Councillor Sharmila Setaram has been elected to the Small Urban Caucus at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Annual Conference. Councillor Setaram’s election is a significant achievement – she was one of four successful candidates from a group of eleven, and she is the only representative from Niagara.

The Small Urban Caucus represents municipalities with populations between 10,000 and 100,000, giving voice to the challenges and opportunities of these communities within the broader provincial landscape. Councillor Setaram’s role on the caucus is voluntary, and she will contribute her expertise to advancing the interests of small urban municipalities across Ontario.

“I am honoured to represent the City of Welland and our Niagara region on AMO’s Small Urban Caucus,” said Councillor Setaram. “This is a valuable opportunity to advocate for our community and collaborate with municipal leaders across Ontario to address the issues that matter most to us.”

Councillor Setaram’s election to the caucus underscores the increasing influence of Welland’s growth and reflects her commitment to the city’s continued development.

“On behalf of the City of Welland, I congratulate Councillor Setaram on her election to the Small Urban Caucus. Her achievement highlights the importance of active participation in organizations like AMO, which are instrumental in advocating for our community,” said Mayor Frank Campion. “All Council members are encouraged to get involved in opportunities that ensure Welland’s voice is heard as we continue collaborating to shape our city’s future.”

The AMO Annual Conference is a key event for Ontario’s municipal sector, bringing together municipal officials, government leaders, and industry experts to discuss issues, share ideas, and shape the future of communities across the province.
