Shaping Welland’s future: draft Official Plan update available for public review and comment
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | July 08, 2024
The City of Welland’s draft Official Plan update, a policy document that guides decision-making on land use, development, and resource management for the next 25 years, is now available for public review and comment.
The draft was developed through planning analysis and research. It incorporates feedback from public engagement sessions initiated in 2021 and includes policies responding to legislation and provincial and regional plans. It also furthers the objectives and priorities of the City’s Strategic Plan. Key highlights of the update include:
- Acknowledgment of First Nations history and treaty lands.
- Strategic directions focused on creating vibrant, healthy communities, addressing climate change, and economic vitality.
- Updated growth management strategies, including revised population forecasts and increased intensification targets to accommodate Welland’s projected growth.
- Emphasis on natural environmental systems, green spaces, and tree protection.
- Integration of art, culture, and design considerations to enhance quality of life.
- Promotion of active transportation and updated infrastructure policies.
“The Official Plan update is important because it contains goals, objectives, and policies that define and support the community’s vision for long-term growth and development,” said Grant Munday, Director of Planning and Development Services. “It provides direction for factors such as the economy, environment, culture, and social services. It is important for Welland residents to review the plan and provide feedback to help us appropriately shape our community. The work doesn’t end here; it’s work that we need to do together.”
Residents are invited to review the draft Official Plan update and provide comments by August 16. The project team will consider the input and feedback ahead of upcoming open houses and statutory public meetings scheduled for the fall.
