City of Welland unveils Wonders of Welland, a one-of-a-kind illustrated children’s book

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | June 17, 2024

The City of Welland is taking an innovative, creative step to extend a warm welcome to its newest members with the release of Wonders of Welland, an illustrated children’s book intended to help families and kids feel more at home in their new, vibrant community.

With the city’s population poised to grow from 56,652 to more than 81,000 over the next decade, the publication tells the story of a child who has recently moved to Welland. It is designed to ease the anxieties of relocation, combat loneliness, and immerse newcomers in the exciting features of the city.

“We’ve packed this story with wonder and charm, hoping to inspire the imagination of young readers and their parents,” says Marc MacDonald, author of the book and the City’s chief communications & engagement officer. “Wonders of Welland serves not only as a colourful guide for both newcomers and established residents, but also contributes to fostering literacy, encouraging family togetherness, and promoting community engagement and civic pride.”

This bold initiative reflects Welland’s ongoing commitment to trailblazing creativity and daring innovation. The project, along with the City’s award-winning municipal podcast, demonstrates Welland’s dedication to being distinctive, original, and inviting.

The City sought community support to bring this unique concept to life. Thanks to the generous financial contributions of Empire Communities, LIV Communities, Mountainview Building Group, Primont Homes, and Silvestri Investments, and in-kind assistance from CERF Niagara, Pride Niagara, the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre, Niagara College, and the Welland Jackfish, all costs to produce the book in print and digital formats, in English and French, were fully covered.

To celebrate the release of Wonders of Welland, the City hosted an exclusive event on Monday, June 17. Sponsors and community partners who contributed to the achievement of this project were invited to the book launch ceremony at City Hall. The event featured presentations by Mayor Frank Campion and Rob Axiak, Chief Administrative Officer, highlighting the significance of the book and expressing gratitude to those who supported the initiative.

As the City of Welland looks forward to a bright, exciting future, this endeavour stands as a testament to its steadfast commitment to building a strong, inclusive, and welcoming community for everyone. The book is available for residents to pick up at City facilities, including City Hall and the Welland Community Centre, and at all Welland Public Library branches.
