Emergency Preparedness Week reminds everyone to plan for every season

The City of Welland encourages its residents to take heed of this year’s Emergency Preparedness Week theme and ‘plan for every season’.

During Emergency Preparedness Week, spanning from May 5 to 11, Welland Fire and Emergency Services will be sharing relevant information across their social media platforms.

”Many residents may not fully appreciate the importance of readiness when it comes to managing emergencies,” said Fire Chief Adam Eckhart. ”It's crucial for every member of our community to understand that they have a role to play in assisting not only themselves but also our friends, family, and the more vulnerable among us. Whether it's having a well-thought-out evacuation plan, keeping emergency supplies stocked, or staying informed about potential risks, being prepared can make all the difference in surviving and recovering from an emergency situation.”

Emergency preparedness increases knowledge and reduces risks in an unforeseen event; emergency preparedness is everyone's responsibility. Residents can prepare themselves by:

1. Making a plan: Include actions that will help yourself and your family stay safe before, during, and after an emergency event.

2. Building a kit: Gather supplies that will enable you and your family to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in the event of an emergency.

3. Staying informed: Follow local authorities for up-to-date information and instructions. Be sure to include a portable, battery-operated radio in your emergency kit.

This annually designated week is a national effort led by Public Safety Canada, provincial and territorial emergency management organizations, Indigenous organizations, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.
