Committee Information
The volunteers on the Heritage Advisory Committee advise City Council on matters related to the Ontario Heritage Act and properties of cultural heritage value the City could protect.
The committee’s responsibilities include:
- establishing criteria to evaluate properties of cultural heritage value
- preparing and maintaining a list of sites worthy of conservation
- advising Council on heritage conservation legislation
- assisting Council with municipal legislation to conserve heritage sites
- implementing programs and activities to increase public awareness of heritage conservation
- informing Council about cultural heritage matters
- administering municipal properties acquired under the Ontario Heritage Act
- organizing heritage designation ceremonies
The committee is interested in stories about:
- buildings and monuments
- streetscapes and landscapes
- bridges and railway stations
- cemeteries
- archaeological sites
- artifacts, documents, and photographs
- stories and folktales
- traditional arts, crafts, and skills
