Fire Chief’s Message

Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility

Welland is a beautiful community and its quality of life offers a great mix of recreation, community, and employment opportunities. The city is experiencing significant growth and a mix of modernization while still maintaining the foundation of what makes Welland home. The unique geography and intersecting waterways shape the community like no other. In support of a healthy and safe community, the City’s firefighters are highly trained and ready to respond to all hazards.

Welland Fire and Emergency Services is comprised of approximately 120 people who make up a high-performing team. Staff are the key to our success, and I am privileged to lead our team alongside two Deputy Chiefs and our broader leadership team. A Platoon Chief leads each of our 17 member platoons, who work around the clock every day of the year. Our department is a composite fire service consisting of 68 career firefighters and 40 volunteer firefighters.

The department is in its last stage of strategically replacing its five aging fire stations with three modern facilities that are ideally located to optimize emergency response times. These buildings also support the health and safety of our team and have been designed to be energy efficient. The department’s training center is located at headquarters and will soon be home to a live fire training tower, supported by committed training professionals.

Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home. Talk with your family about what to do if there is a fire in your home. Be prepared; early notification saves lives. Our fire prevention team is available to help you ensure the highest level of fire safety for your property or business. Don’t hesitate to call them during regular office hours.

Fire safety starts with you, be safe!
