Crossing Guards

Crossing guards are the unsung heroes of a school day. They get our children safely across roadways and busy intersections. We entrust them with our greatest gift. Being a crossing guard is more than just a job; it’s a commitment that reaches down to the depths of who you are as an outstanding community member. We need you. Are you ready?

General information

A school crossing guard is a person employed by a municipality who directs the movement of pedestrians across a highway. School crossing guards have one of the most responsible and important positions within the City of Welland: ensuring the safety of pedestrians when crossing a roadway.

School crossing guards are regulated to stop the movement of traffic under the authority of the Highway Traffic Act. Recently approved legislation requires a school crossing guard to cross all pedestrians, not just children. A handheld stop sign is displayed upright, facing traffic approaching each direction.

Guards are on duty as follows:

  • direct vicinity of school — 30 minutes before admission and after dismissal
  • locations further away — 45 minutes before admission and after dismissal

How to apply to be a crossing guard

Crossing guards must be 16 years of age or older and must provide a criminal record summary. In addition, school crossing guards must be willing to work in various weather conditions.
