Marriage Certificates

A marriage certificate is the legal record of a marriage. You must register your marriage before obtaining a marriage certificate.

The official who performs an Ontario marriage initiates the registration process by forwarding your complete and signed marriage licence to the province’s Office of the Registrar General.

If you get married outside of Ontario, your marriage will not be registered in Ontario. Instead, it is registered in the jurisdiction where it took place. Marriage certificates are obtained from that jurisdiction.

The City of Welland does not hold marriage records. However, the Office of the Registrar General holds records for marriages in Ontario during the past 80 years. To apply online, please visit ServiceOntario at www.ontario.ca/page/how-get-copy-ontario-marriage-certificate-online.

To obtain a paper application, please visit the City Clerks department.
